I am walking through Ocho Rios Jamaica at 8:30pm and I had to wonder, is prostitution an acceptable trade in this region, namely the north Coast, more specifically” Ochi”. In some parishes you have to visit the “back roads” to find them, however here they are out on the main like major brands packed on the front shelves at the supermarket. Oh and don’t believe it is just one or two, you have plenty of options varying in sizes and age groups. The most convenient part about it, some even carry out their job on spot, especially on a major bank property located on Main Street, Ocho Rios.
Over the years prostitution has been directly linked to the Tourism Industry, ‘Sun, Sea, Sand and Sex’. We have guests who come from all over the world to indulge in that well marketed brand, rent-a-dread or to experience that Jamaican whine from females. It is amazing the level of harassment, that tourists goes through on days when they make that step off a cruise ship unto our little paradise or when they venture out of their vacuum vacation (All inclusive properties) for shopping. Some may not agree, however if we allow these persons to conduct business openly, it therefore means that it is fully acceptable. If we allow these persons to target our tourists, it therefore means that we are ok with sex tourism being an attraction on the north coast. Why is it that we cannot clean our streets and allow tourists to search if they so badly need it, instead of having it open like a Burger King Menu board. Those who are familiar with Ocho Rios may understand why I used Burger King, as that road adjacent to the plaza is a hot spot.
We all know that prostitution creates an environment that foster, diseases, violence and drug abuse. Then why is it allowed to the point where it is open to our children and the general public? Why is this sore being allowed to fester? you may say it has been ever since but “a nuh same day leave drop a water bottom it rotten”.
We can never stop prostitution but we can definitely put a lid on it!
